A $2.1 million mid-century modern gem in Connecticut with a curved roof and unique design

A mid-century modern masterpiece recently listed in New Canaan, CT, features a stunning design for $2.1 million.

James Evans trained at Yale and designed this home for his own family,” says the listing agent John Engelby Douglas Elliman.

“At the time, he was looking to take the Glass House concept in a new direction, so the house was a roof design experiment.”

Not only does the spacious house have a unique design, but it also has a hyperbolic or curved paraboloid roof. (You can get more details on the design from a YouTube discussion by the architect, who died in 2021.)

“Since it is not a straight roof, it drains water more efficiently and gutters are not necessary. It also does not collect water or leaves. It is very innovative and lasts longer thanks to its shape,” says Engel.

Engel and his team will be hosting a home reception following The Best of New Canaan Modern Architecture Tour to benefit the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society on October 20. New Canaan is known for its mid-century modern homes.

The innovative design of the house includes suspension bridge technology and glass walls.

“You have a two-story glass wall and terrace that wraps around it, so the transition between indoors and outdoors is seamless, not only through the six sliding glass doors, but also the windows,” notes Engel.

The master bedroom is on the ground floor and four more are on the fully exposed lower level at the rear of the house.

“It takes a bit of getting used to,” says Engel. “The ceiling is unobstructed, but that’s the whole point of the design – so you can see from one side of the house to the other.”

Who does Engel envision being the next buyer?

“This house probably got 10 times more traffic than any listing in our portfolio,” he says. “Most people interested are from New York or LA. I think this will end up being a second home for someone, but we’ve had people looking at it and wanting to add a guest house and a swimming pool for a main residence.”
