Architectural interventions and exhibitions at Salone del Mobile 2022

Only a few days remain until the annual inauguration of Milan Design Week 2022, one of the biggest international design events that includes the Fuorisalone and the Salone del Mobile. From June 7 to 12, 2022, the streets of Milan will host a series of architectural interventions and exhibitions organized by local and international designers as part of Fuorisalone. And at the Fiera Milano | Rho, Salone del Mobile 2022, the anticipated event of the year for furniture and interior design, will celebrate its 60th anniversary with themes and projects that reflect “inclusive” design, promoting “autonomy, comfort, movement, friendliness, interaction and safety for everything”.

The theme of this year’s Salone demonstrates that it is both possible and crucial to begin to integrate sustainability and environmental awareness into furniture production. More than 2,000 exhibitors, including more than 600 young designers under the age of 35, will express their own identity and creative freedom, using the exhibition space as both an architectural and communication element with sustainability and ecology as main criteria.

At the Fiera Milano Rho, visitors will discover several recurring and new events simultaneously. The International Furniture Fair, the International Furniture Accessories Fair, Workplace3.0, the kitchen-focused EuroCucina with side event FTK: Technology For the kitchen, and the International Bathroom Exhibition will exhibit innovative design solutions, as at each edition of the Salone. SaloneSatellite will highlight 600 talented designers under the age of 35 and S.Project, a transversal space dedicated to the different fields of design, will return after its successful debut in 2019. Alongside the exhibitions, a program of Talks will be organized by the Salone del Mobile.Milano and SaloneSatellite in their respective arenas. A selection of architects, including Liam Young and Mario Cucinella, art directors, academics, furniture designers and illustrators, to name a few, will be interviewed by an all-female trio: Chiara Alessi, Maria Cristina Didero and Beatrice Leanza, to discuss all things design, innovation, environment, trends and challenges we face today.

Moving faster towards design, production and distribution solutions that are ethical and as sustainable as possible, Salone will present a major project curated by architect Mario Cucinella. The 1,400 m² installation entitled Design with nature will be located in Pavilion 15 of the S.Project, exhibiting a virtuous ecosystem that represents the future of home living. It will highlight topics such as the circular economy and reuse, exploring the potential of cities as “reserves” of the future where raw materials used in construction could be sourced.

Beyond the Fiera Milano | Rho, designers, companies and universities will present architectural interventions, installations and innovative solutions in the streets of Milan as part of fuorisalone. This year’s edition, titled “Between space and time“, will reflect on the changes taking place in the world today, which are necessary to achieve the sustainability goals of tomorrow. The Fuorisalone 2022 program includes the Brera Design Week, which offers more than 160 events, including exhibitions , installations, group exhibitions and new products, as well as the return of Milano Durini Design, 5VIE Design Week and Isola Design District.

UNStudio, in collaboration with Fashion Research Italy Foundation, will present the concept of the Future Perfect project, an ongoing investigation that aims to create a design collection of “(extra)ordinary objects” at the Salone del Mobile. Rather than recycling leftover products, the concept is to reuse them by combining, crushing and modifying them in such a way as to respect their original properties. CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati, in collaboration with Rhea and Italo Rota, will unveil a prototype of the Coffee Landscape, a reconfigurable installation that aims to rethink the experience of preparing and drinking coffee in the office. The design allows people to socialize around an expansive platform with reconfigurable seats arranged at different heights.

Los Angeles-based design collective RIOS will exhibit Superbloom, a multi-sensory installation that uses colors, scents and sounds as a tribute to the natural and rare phenomenon of a superbloom. Natuzzi Italia is honoring the protection of olive trees against the Xylella epidemic through the photographic exhibition TRE(E)PIDATION by Giampaolo Sgura and an installation entitled Germogli by Marcantonio in the courtyard of Palazzo Durini Caproni di Taliedo next to the flagship store. Nature Squared and ANOTHERVIEW exhibit VIEW 20, a limited-edition custom architectural installation that reframes views of concept art, material design, nature, and travel. The canopy, handmade from handwoven abaca, rattan and gold thread, pays homage to the elegant traditional tent structures of Rajasthan.

In addition to installations and interventions, visitors will have the chance to see how architects have diversified and immersed themselves in the worlds of interior design, furniture and lighting, creating unique pieces in collaboration with brands. of international design. These collaborations include pieces from UNStudio, the late Spanish architect Enric Miralles, and OMA, to name a few.

Designboom, Architonic and ArchDaily, which make up the DAAily platforms, have set up a unique space for visitors to Milan Design Week 2022, programmed to tell stories, designed by architects and designers for architects and designers. Hosted by Swiss Corner, the DAAily bar will serve as a new meeting point in the city during Milan Design Week, inviting design enthusiasts, creatives and pioneers in the design industry to come and meet people from all over the world. . In addition to hourly live chats with architects, artists, product designers, floral designers and fragrance designers, to name a few, visitors will be able to experience a unique and immersive space that presents several art installations by renowned artists. The list of architects hosted includes Stefano Boeri, Jakob Lange from BIG, Alper Derinboğaz, Mario Cucinella, Carlo Ratti and Benjamin Gallegos Gabilondo from Supervoid.
