Text description provided by the architects. Located in Halifax’s long-established West-End, a dark and bold gable emerges from a quiet residential area. The Armcrescent Residence represents an architectural investigation aimed at increasing urban density on the Halifax Peninsula, a growing need and topic of discussion in the city in recent years. Although the city respects history and culture, there is an enthusiasm and desire for more progressive work.

The exterior massing and form are intended to modernize the traditional architectural forms found in historic Halifax. The exterior material features a variety of textures in a minimal color palette. The black reduces the building to its formal qualities, almost like a silhouette on a landscape. Concrete retaining walls formed from surrounding custom panels provide an opportunity to view dense urban residential landscaping as a complementary three-dimensional form to connect interior and exterior.

Like the exterior, the interior design of the Armcrescent Residence can be described as contemporary vernacular that places a high value on craftsmanship. As an architect and builder, Peter Braithwaite Studio celebrates a diverse range of materials in a modern industrial style with great attention to detail and craftsmanship throughout the residence. Materiality is used to create contrast in each space. Characteristic elements such as a teak slatted screen or raw cross-bridged hemlock rafters create a dynamic bittersweet relationship.
