Cal watches Canadian star – The Interior Journal

While there was a lot of attention on Illinois big man Kofi Cockburn not transferring to Kentucky and what high school sensation Jalen Duren will do about college, coach John Calipari has not lost track of Arizona Compass 6-5 senior full-back Shaedon Sharpe.

The Canadian is one of the top 10 players in the recruiting class of 2022 by 247Sports and # 11 on Sharpe paid an official visit to the UK in June – his only official visit – and is friends with UK engagement Skyy Clark, who recently tore up his ACL and will no longer play this summer.

Calipari watched Sharpe’s first two games in the Nike Summer League last week when Sharpe scored 59 combined points and rose to 8 for 16 on a 3-point range.

Sharpe has ties to Kentucky as summer team manager and basketball mentor Dwayne Washington coached former British star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander who now shines in the NBA.

“Shai had a lot of goals but I really thought it would take him over a year (in Kentucky) to be ready for the NBA,” Washington said. “He still has goals, but he knows it’s a process like Shaedon does.

“Shaedon has taken care of his body and has become stronger and wiser, just like Shai. Shai is climbing and his skills are on a constant slope mainly because of the process he has held. It is the same with Shaedon.

Shaedon has more pop due to his athleticism. He shoots more like Jamal (Murray). He’s more athletic like a mini Vince Carter.

“He worked a lot on his midrange stuff, playing defense, rebounding. He knows he still has work to do to be ready for the next level.
