As a five-year starter at Tennessee-Chattanooga, Strange will be one of the oldest prospects taken in the 2022 NFL Draft, but that shouldn’t get in the way of his role maintaining the offensive line in the middle of the trenches.
Small school prospects still face questions about how competitive they are, but Strange has made waves as a college player as well as with a big performance in the Senior Bowl this year. Coming into guard and center during the Senior Bowl, Strange had no problem against big-school defenders. He also had a strong showing in the Combine, posting numbers that put him in the 90th percentile among linemen in nearly every category. He’s likely a second-day pick who could start in the pros this season.
Cole Strange: reconnaissance report
A natural athlete with an average streak, Strange has everything a team could want in an inside lineman. He can light up a defender with his first move off the snap, maintaining an excellent level of pad. He has the hands and footwork to stay with his man, and his lateral quickness is another asset that makes him tough to beat. Strange can also get the second level in a hurry.
Despite weighing 307 pounds, Strange is quite lean at 6-foot-5. His frame and speed make him a better fit in an area blocking scheme, where he wouldn’t be expected to consistently win man-to-man battles in the trenches against bigger, stronger defensive tackles. He’s done some work as a centre, but that area of his game might need some fine-tuning for him to find a center job in the pros.
Simulated landing sites
Mel Kiper/Todd McShay (ESPN): No. 60, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
“It’s a position clearly needed for Tampa Bay, which lost Alex Cappa in free agency and Ali Marpet retired. Even after the exchange of Shaq Mason, the Bucs have a hole. Strange, who had a really solid Senior Bowl, started 44 games at left guard in college. —Kiper
Chris Trapasso (CBS Sports): No. 81, New York Giants
Sports News: No. 90, Tennessee Titans
“The Titans have limited depth at guard around center Ben Jones. Strange offers natural size and strength and untapped athleticism.
