Workstead, an award-winning multidisciplinary design firm, has an opening in our interiors studio for a seasoned project manager with a strong design background to join our Brooklyn studio on a contract basis. The contractual period, scheduled from November to March, is structured to cover maternity leave. A transition from a contract to a full-time position will be assessed based on team performance and suitability.

Working with and under the direction of a Managing Director and a Creative Director, this individual will be responsible for leading large, complex projects with a clear goal of delivering the highest quality of service, customer satisfaction and design. The Project Manager is responsible for maintaining and tracking project profitability and timeliness, as well as coordinating and managing project communications, contracts, budgets, and timelines. The Project Manager also serves as the primary point of communication between clients and Workstead.


  • Identify the client’s project goals, objectives and quality expectations, and communicate this information to the project team

  • Maintain positive communications and relationships with client, consultants and team members

  • Use firm project management tools for initiating, scheduling, invoicing, collecting, and tracking labor

  • Create internal project work plans, manage and delegate team tasks, stay on top of progress and adjust as needed to accommodate changing deadlines

  • Review internal project accounting records and process preliminary project billing and review with studio management project profitability, recoveries and backlog projections

  • Work with studio management to allocate and balance resources

  • Monitor team progress, evaluate team performance, and provide timely and effective feedback to the team

  • Review all project deliverables before submitting them to the client

  • Prepare and review proposals, contracts and consultant agreements


  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture or interior design. A higher degree is a plus.

  • 7+ years of experience in an architectural or interior design firm, including at least 4 years of experience in a client-facing project management role

  • Possess excellent management, leadership, organizational and presentation skills

  • Preferably located in New York City, with the ability to travel as needed for the project

  • Demonstrated knowledge of construction materials, construction methods and systems, project costs, and code requirements

  • Experience overseeing the design team through the concept, schematic and design development phases as well as leading through documentation and construction administration

  • Registered architect preferred, although not required
