Legendary London hotel Claridge’s opens new spa

If you’re in Mayfair and admire all the important sights to see – among them Christian Louboutin, Harrod’s, Hyde Park – there’s a newcomer to town that’s sure to interest you.

This is the brand new spa at Claridge’s, the famous Art Deco gem that embodies timeless glamor and grand English style. There’s nowhere like Claridge’s. The hotel began life in 1856 and quickly came to royal attention. During the 1920s it became an English institution as a landmark, loved by film stars and statesmen, fashion designers and world dignitaries.

In a groundbreaking project that saw teams of experts dig five floors out of London clay to pave the way for the next 200 years of Claridge’s life, the legendary Mayfair Hotel announces the opening of its first-ever spa . Claridge’s Spa will be a haven of well-being and tranquility featuring a swimming pool, steam rooms, sauna and seven treatment rooms – a sensory space that evokes well-being and spirituality. Interior designer based in Hong Kong Andre Fu designed the 7,000 square foot spa that promises to provide the ultimate sanctuary in the heart of Mayfair. Fu, who has worked extensively with Maybourne Hotel Group on other projects, was asked to bring his very personal vision for a new wellness experience at this iconic London hotel.

Set against the backdrop of the hotel’s Art Deco history, the spa was designed to evoke the spirituality of the Orient. The inspiration for this approach came from Fu’s own experiences visiting traditional Japanese temples and Zen gardens in Kyoto. However, rather than imitating these particular aesthetic traditions, Fu has imagined a unique contemporary experience that fosters a true sense of mindfulness and balance, drawing heavily on Asian design influences.

Upon entering the lobby, guests are greeted by a full height cast glass screen designed by Irish craftsman Eoin Turner. The texture of the glass evokes the silhouette of bamboo groves or reed beds, guiding them through the rotunda – a meditative, dimly lit cylindrical space that features a suspended Japanese glass artwork by Victoire Bourgois. The falling water streams along the installation, creating a multi-sensory atmosphere with relaxing sound and visual elements.

The main pool is the central hub of the spa. Minimalist in spirit, two rows of limestone-clad columns and a magnificent multi-vaulted ceiling frame the pool. Set back from the water, personal cabanas provide private spaces to relax.

Inspired by the silhouette of the bamboo forest, the treatment spaces are imbued with a sense of calm and meditation. Bonsai trees are also featured extensively in the connecting passageway to accentuate the sense of nature throughout the spa.

The ultimate urban retreat can be found in each of the seven private treatment rooms which are lined with full-height oak panels that conceal all amenities.

The most unusual spa treatment is the Body Detox and Scrub, while the best-selling spa treatment is the Bamboo and Silk ritual.

A remarkable roster of beauty industry names will reside in the spa: Claridge’s Josh Wood offers a bespoke menu of the best-in-class hair and beauty services located in the Claridge’s spa – and just two chairs, which makes the services private and personalized. Treatments cover hair, nails and beauty, with color and makeup available on request. In a conscious decision to install only two chairs, the services remain superior and special.

FaceGym has designed treatments exclusively for Claridge’s, with longer treatment times and additional stretching to enhance the experience. Treatments such as Cryo Contour, Radio Frequency and Clean + Lift are the heroes and treatment boosters include vitamin injections, Cryo oxygen injections and hyaluronic acid roller application for even more pampering.
