PRESS RELEASE

Governor Andy Beshear and the Kentucky State Police announced that all KSP Regional Driver Testing Branches have been established within the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Regional Driver Licensing Offices and are open and ready to function. Residents will now have the option to book driving test appointments at any regional office in the Commonwealth, regardless of their county of residence.

In March 2020, House Bill 453 enacted the transition of licensing services to KYTC as the sole driver’s license issuer and operator, including REAL ID. The bill required regional offices to be operational across the state by June 30, 2022. KSP met the deadline as of the date of today’s announcement.

“We appreciate that KSP and KYTC are working together to expand driver licensing services to Kentuckians statewide,” Governor Beshear said. “Now that residents can make an appointment at any regional office, our Kentucky families have expanded access to the services they need, making it easier for them to pass a written driving or skills test. and get a permit at one place in one day.”

Appointments are available Monday through Friday and can be made online by visiting the KSP website. Residents must make an appointment at any regional branch prior to arrival for a driver’s license, driver’s license or commercial driver’s license test. Successful test applicants will be served on the same day by KYTC Regional Driver’s License Office staff to apply for a permit or license, depending on capacity and time of day, without making a separate appointment. .

“One of the benefits of regional branches is the increased availability of testing services. Allowing citizens to choose where they receive these services adds increased flexibility for scheduling appointments. The increased availability and flexibility are both made possible by the regionalization of our services,” said KSP Driving Test Commander Captain Marshall Johnson. “New appointments will be posted daily at 8 a.m., Monday through Friday, and citizens can now book appointments wherever is most convenient for them.”

Captain Johnson then thanked and acknowledged KSP’s driving test arm for their hard work and quick response over the past two years in transitioning to a regional model. The transition was done efficiently, with limited staff and during a nationwide pandemic.

Prior to an appointment, new drivers should prepare for the exam by accessing Kentucky’s only approved driver’s manual or via the official KSP mobile app. All driving test documents can be viewed and downloaded for free.

According to KYTC, Kentucky will continue to offer the option of a standard driver’s license, but a REAL ID or other federally approved form of identification, such as a passport or military ID, will eventually be available. necessary for people 18 and older to board commercial flights and access military bases and federal buildings that currently require identification. Federal enforcement is scheduled to begin May 3, 2023.

The first application for REAL ID must be made in person at a regional driver’s license office. Specific documentation is required. A list of acceptable documents and a link to take an interactive quiz that populates a personalized list of documents are available at drive.ky.gov | Document guide. Residents of Kentucky can renew their driver’s license online, by mail, or in person. For more information, visit drive.ky.gov.
