Architecture firm Populous has been selected to design the new multipurpose event arena in Munich, Germany.
Following planning approval by the city council of Freising, SWMUNICH Real Estate will build and operate the modern, multifunctional concert and congress hall, which will accommodate up to 20,000 visitors.
The new facility will be built next to LabCampus, Munich Airport’s technology and innovation center. It is backed by private sector investment of over $326.8 million (€300 million).
Populous said its design was selected following a multi-stage architectural competition.
The seats in the new arena are arranged in a horseshoe shape (270°) and will focus on the multifunctional stage.
The structure of the new facility will allow visitors to see inside the arena, even from a distance.
The interior design of the arena is designed to take into account the increasing demands of artists in terms of performances, technology and productions.
The center will be adapted to the needs of organizers, artists and visitors, to offer concerts and live experiences.
Declan Sharkey, Principal Director and Principal Architect of the Populous Project, said: “The design of MUCcc Arena puts people at the heart, providing a unique and immersive visitor experience, as well as showcasing the very latest in sustainable design methods.
“The project will create a new cultural hub for Munich, and the wider Bavarian region, to rival the best live entertainment venues in the world.”
Life cycle based planning was designed to reduce carbon footprint during construction and climate positive management during operation phase.
The new event arena will have several thousand solar panels on the roof, as well as around the venue.
