A week before summer, new showrooms are popping up everywhere. In our monthly recap, Home business brings together all the expansions and openings to have on your radar.

Spotlight on the showroom: Rimadesio launches a North American flagship

Giussano, Italian-based home furnishings brand Rimadesio had been toying with the idea of a showroom in the United States for quite some time. But it wasn’t until last month that the company was finally able to make that dream come true with a shiny new flagship store in New York’s NoMad neighborhood.

For years, Rimadesio’s business model in the United States consisted of a single independent representative, Andrea Romano, based in Europe and commuting approximately four times a year to expand the US market. But Romano believed that if the business was to really take off, it would have to establish itself more permanently in America. “In the United States, if you want to do something good [with your business]you have to do it here,” he said Home business. “You must be here.”

So Rimadesio began expanding its North American distribution network through multi-line showrooms, growing from one dealer to two, then to 20. “At that point, I started saying that if we wanted to do well in the United States, we needed our own showroom,” says Romano.

When Rimadesio began looking for a location, he was faced with the all-too-familiar sky-high prices of the Manhattan real estate market. Then the pandemic hit. “We had seen this space before COVID, but the money they were asking for was beyond anything we could even think of,” says Romano. “When COVID hit, I said, ‘OK, let’s check again. Another realtor gave us lots of options and told me the owner was open to a conversation about price. We reduced it by 37%, and I called [owners and brothers Luigi and Davide Malberti] and said we either do it now – the perfect price, the right location – or never. A week later, we agreed on the space.

The new flagship is spread over three floors totaling more than 6,000 square feet, a space that Italian architect took Andrea Pozzoli about a year to get a makeover. Led by Romano and a team of four, the showroom showcases the company’s entire product portfolio, from doors and shelves to panels and cupboards, allowing architects and designers to experience multiple Rimadesio products working in concert. “Designers can touch and see that Rimadesio goes beyond a simple sliding door – they see back panels, entire walls, passageways with furniture,” he says. “Suddenly they realize that Rimadesio is not just a product but a complete system. Not only do you sell more this way, but designers can find real solutions. They look like kids in a toy store. And it’s contagious – they use it in one house, then in another and in another. This is what we’re trying to do here.
