MArk Stoops isn’t looking for excuses after his team’s 24-21 loss to Vanderbilt last Saturday.

“I don’t feel comfortable talking about apologies,” Stoops said Monday. “I thank coach (Clark) Lea and Vandy for overstepping us and coaching us. They did a really good job. They came in and did some really good things with a quarterback who played a very good game.

At the same time, Stoops said the Wildcats (6-4, 3-4 Southeastern Conference) failed to capitalize and “had our chances of winning.”

“We can’t put ourselves in a position where it’s a game here or a game there,” he said. “We had these opportunities. We have won these games in the past and many times and we have won a few of them. And it will happen, if you continue to play very close matches. We didn’t play down the stretch to win.

Stoops and his troops didn’t have much time to dwell on the disappointing setback. The Wildcats host top-ranked Georgia (10-0, 7-0) on Saturday in the SEC Finals for both teams.

“We’re playing the number one team in the country and they deserve to be number one,” Stoops said. “They are awfully impressive in every way, shape or form. They deserve to be where they are and we have a big challenge ahead of us.

Along with preparing for the Bulldogs, Stoops also knows his top priority is to improve on both sides of the ball.

“We have to continue to work extremely hard and evaluate all aspects of the program and try to improve,” the Kentucky coach said. “We always accept responsibility. We are constantly learning, changing and adjusting and doing our best to put ourselves in a position to win games. There are no excuses, we have to improve, train better and play better. And we will continue to do so and work on it. »

Although the Wildcats have lost four of the last six games, Stoops believes in his players and his team.

“Nobody gave up,” he said. “We have a very good team. We have to play better in certain situations. We still have a lot in us. We could certainly do better. But we all believe in our team.
