Kengo Kuma, considered one of the world’s most eminent architects, was the only architect named to the TIME100 list of most influential people of 2021. He was the lead architect at V&A Dundee. Kuma is known for his extensive and innovative use of natural materials, in particular wood – a preference which was evident in his interior design for V&A Dundee.

For the Luminary project, Kuma and his protege Maurizio Mucciola set out to create a poetic connection between architectural design and whiskey making, anchored by the sharing of materials and inspirations drawn from nature.

Richard Paterson, Master Distiller at Dalmore Distillery, was awarded the prestigious Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2021 for his distinguished contribution to the whiskey industry. He and Kuma channeled their 60+ years of experience into making The Rare.

Meanwhile, their respective protégés, Maurizio Mucciola and Gregg Glass (The Dalmore), created The Collectible together. Presenting themselves as both a tribute to their mentors and a showcase of their own ingenuity and artistry exudes a deep respect for natural materials and the artistic process, as well as the collaborators’ commitment to excellence.

Luminary No.1 Edition 2022 – The Rare

Co-designed by Kengo Kuma and Richard Paterson OBE, The Rare represents a historic interdisciplinary union between architecture and whiskey making, The Dalmore said. This extremely rare 48-year-old single malt, which marked the inaugural chapter of a four-year partnership between The Dalmore and V&A Dundee from 2020, represents a milestone in both men’s careers, the company added.

Only three bottles of Luminary No.1 2022 Edition – The Rare have been released

With only three bottles created for this edition, The Rare is a rarity in The Dalmore’s history. It was aged for 48 years in Scottish and Japanese oak barrels. Each carafe is accompanied by a sculpture of Kuma made up of 48 diamond-shaped particles handcrafted from Scottish oak, Japanese oak and polished steel. Oak and shiny metal together bring a sense of layer and balance in a nod to the complex yet harmonious flavor of whisky.

Richard Paterson, Gregg Glass and Maurizio Mucciola celebrate the partnership and reflect on the vital role of wood in the design of the V&A Dundee and in the making of The Dalmore Luminary No.1 2022 Edition

Luminary No.1 2022 Edition – The Collector’s Item

A 15-year-old single malt crafted by master whiskey maker and blender Gregg Glass, The Collectible begins its maturation journey in American white oak casks and ends in Italian Amarone red wine casks and specialty casks.” Kintsugi”. These, customized specifically for the series, were crafted from Scottish Oak, Japanese Mizunara Oak and American White Oak to achieve the desired flavor balance.

The accompanying case, designed by Maurizio Mucciola, continues the diamond-shaped particle design of his mentor Kuma. It features an earthy palette that evokes the warmth of nature, emphasizing the connection between the natural environment and whiskey making.

The four-year collaboration between Dalmore and V&A Dundee is much more than a product development opportunity, the whiskey company has said. As the fastest growing single malt brand in the world, The Dalmore hopes to forge a global platform with the museum for contemporary distillers and designers to support and cultivate creative talent in both fields. This will encourage more creatively-minded industry professionals to create masterpieces of the future, The Dalmore said.
