Danang, Viet Nam – Bill Bensley, the renowned architect, landscape architect, artist and interior designer who created the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort, returns to the scene of his escape project this year, as this extraordinary resort on the Danang Peninsula Son Tra in Vietnam celebrates its 10and anniversary with a series of remarkable renovations.

Nestled in 39 hectares of lush jungle on four idyllic levels – Sky, Sky, Land and Sea – all connected by a cable car and cascading down to a private bay with a 700 meter long sandy beach, InterContinental Danang was the project that propelled Bensley to international stardom. Its iconic architecture and interior design stimulate the senses and excite the imagination; an explosion of creativity, the resort blends Vietnamese culture with a contemporary flair with a bold black and white palette, bold pops of color, authentic Vietnamese shapes and original fixtures and furnishings – all 100% designed by BENSLEY, often in partnership with local artisans.

Over the past decade, this has made a lasting impression on thousands of guests and helped the resort win several major awards, including being named ‘Best Hotel in Vietnam’ in the DestinAsian Readers’ Choice Awards 2022. Now, As the property marks the start of its second decade, Bensley returns to oversee the upgrade project that will position it for an exciting new era.

At the heart of this refresh will be an adaptation of the original design concept that embraces the environment and enables conservation – a key part of the resort’s ethos. During initial development in 2012, Bensley deliberately consolidated building footprints to minimize ecological impact and let nature flourish, especially native species such as red-tailed douc langurs. This sensitive approach will continue in the next chapter of the station.

New facilities to be launched this year include a collection of four-bedroom villas, a significantly expanded family pool and children’s pool, a rejuvenated spa, an indoor-outdoor fitness center, two new restaurants, a new reception, new retail opportunities and an all-new, expanded Club InterContinental lounge. A dedicated discovery center will also invite guests to learn more about the environment of Son Tra Peninsula, including the critically endangered red-tailed douc langurs.

A series of exciting new experiences will also be introduced, such as the Nam Tram Dining Journey, a unique culinary adventure aboard the station’s funicular, as well as a collection of enriching wellness experiences at the spa. All of these will be completed by the fourth quarter of 2022.

Last year, the station officially opened the Bensley Outsider Gallery, an elegant pavilion in a cobbled courtyard that houses a collection of bold and colorful artwork by Bensley himself. It was Bensley’s first time opening a gallery at any of its more than 200 hotels and resorts around the world, and it’s now returning for the first time since its launch. Guests can purchase his artwork, and proceeds are donated to charitable causes, including wildlife conservation in Southeast Asia.

“Bill Bensley is the world’s most iconic hotel designer and his extraordinary imagination has contributed immensely to the success of this resort. As we celebrate our 10and anniversary, it is a pleasure to work intensively with him again, as we write the next chapter of InterContinental Danang with an eco-friendly script,” said Mr. Seif Hamdy, General Manager of the resort.

“When I first designed InterContinental Danang, I tapped into the local architectural vernacular, taking my favorite elements from the country’s temples and palaces and creating an ode to Vietnam with a modern twist. Now that we refresh the station, we look at the natural vernacular: what Mother Nature gave us. My goal is to be a steward of the creatures that live here, and in particular to defend the endangered species of Vietnam”, said Bill Bensley.
